Analysis of the Level of Digitisation in EU Countries

The level of digitisation of enterprises in the European Union shows considerable variation, as reflected in the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2023. According to this index, Nordic countries such as Finland, Denmark, and Sweden remain leaders in digitisation, occupying top positions in the ranking.

DESI 2023 data show that:

  • In terms of integrating digital technologies by enterprises, the EU average is 41.4%, with Finland (67.1%), Denmark (65.5%), and the Netherlands (62.1%) leading in this area.
  • About 38% of EU enterprises use cloud computing services, up from 26% in 2018.
  • The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in EU companies, despite the popularity of the topic, increased by only 1%, reaching 8% in 2023 compared to 7% in the previous year.
  • 18% of EU companies use big data analytics, with Malta (29%) and the Netherlands (27%) leading.
  • There remains a significant gap between large enterprises and SMEs in the adoption of digital technologies.

The conclusions from these data are as follows:

  • Efforts to digitise in lower-performing countries, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, need to be intensified.
  • There is a need to support SMEs in the digital transformation process to reduce the gap between them and large corporations.
  • Despite progress, the EU still needs to work on increasing the use of advanced technologies such as AI and big data to remain competitive in the global market.
  • The success of Nordic countries can serve as a model for other member states in terms of policies supporting digitisation.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digitisation process but has also highlighted existing digital inequalities between regions and economic sectors.

These data and conclusions underline that despite overall progress, the EU must continue its efforts towards digital transformation to achieve the goals set out in the Digital Decade for Europe by 2030.

eIDAS 2.0 and the European Digital Wallet

The concept and pace of digitisation are inextricably linked with the eIDAS regulation – which, in its revised version 2.0, introduces more trust services and the European Digital Wallet. These innovations will ensure the secure storage and sharing of data, recognised throughout the European Union. Additionally, it will be possible to obtain a free qualified electronic signature certificate for non-professional purposes, increasing the accessibility and security of digital services.

How to Lead Transformation in a Company?

We move the transformation topic from analysis and statistics to specific stories and implementations. What exactly is the digitisation process and what is the role of a change leader? This question was the main topic of a panel discussion led by Łukasz Zakrzewski. Michał Miszulowicz from BNP Paribas Polska, Sławomir Polus from Masterlease, and Marek Piotrowski from the University of Economics in Wrocław shared their experiences and perspectives.

Key conclusions:

  1. Transformation as a Competitiveness Factor – Digitisation is not only a way to meet customer needs but also an element that builds a competitive advantage.

  2. Necessary Support – Transformation leaders need support from the board and the management team, including the CFO, to effectively implement changes.

  3. Adaptation and Communication – Teams need time and support to adapt to new solutions, and good communication of changes is crucial.

  4. Action Strategy – Having a well-thought-out action strategy is essential for effective transformation and achieving the desired results.

An action plan is a fundamental conclusion, as over 3/4 of companies (78%) do not have a formal document on their digital transformation strategy.

More Processes are Being Digitised – What's New?

Digitisation is a continuous process that covers more and more areas of activity. As technology and legislation develop, more areas are digitised, allowing companies to increase the efficiency and security of their operations. So what new processes can change leaders include in the pool of electronically handled processes?

  • BROKER ID this is a solution in the field of eID, which integrates various identity verification methods in one place. BROKER ID increases user security and convenience, allowing easy and quick identity verification in different systems.

  • eDelivery –this equally interesting service in the area of registered mail is also switching to electronic mode. It simplifies communication, reduces costs, and improves the quality and speed of information transmission.

Effectively Communicating Change

For digital transformation to be effective, it must not only be implemented safely and consciously but also properly communicated within the team. This element is often overlooked by leaders, yet it ultimately determines the success of change implementation.

So how to successfully communicate the introduced change? During an inspirational speech, Jarosław Kuźniar highlighted three key steps:

  • Be Convinced – confidence in communicating changes builds team trust and action effectiveness.
  • Take Responsibility – leaders must take full responsibility for the process and results of changes.
  • Be Honest – transparency and honesty build trust and team engagement.
